White Plains Public Library announces
New MICHAEL ALBERT works in its Museum Gallery
White Plains, NY January 31, 2012 - White Plains collage artist Michael Albert has refreshed over 90 percent of his popular display in the White Plains Library Museum Gallery, providing viewers with many new works to enjoy. With the change in artwork the exhibition-open during regular library hours-has been extended until April 30, 2012.
Albert himself will be on hand for a gallery talk and book signing Saturday, March 17 at 3 p.m. In addition, Albert will lead two collage workshops for children in first through sixth grade during the month of April. The first, "Library: Family Mini Collage" will be part of the annual "Trumble in The Trove" family fun day on Sunday, April 1. The second, "Earth Day Collage," will be held on Sunday, April 22. Both workshops take place between 2 to 4 p.m.
"Michael Albert is a local treasure," said Library Director Brian Kenney. "We are fortunate to have him as part of the community and are especially grateful for his generosity in leading workshops with children."
Michael Albert has been making art since his college days at New York University, and became interested in art after visiting many of the great museums of New York. After seven years of drawing, he began an exploration of collage. Soon he began to use the extra photographs he had accumulated after putting together his family photo album to create "cubist-type" collage portraits of family and friends. One day, due to his reluctance to throw away a Frosted Flakes cereal box, Albert created his first collage titled, "Portrait of an American Classic." This led to a series of collages using famous brands, including a collection of over 500 original cereal box collages, which he refers to as 'cerealism," as a cross between Picasso's cubism and Warhol's pop.
